The two crossing streets of Foubert's Place and Newburgh Street are just off Carnaby Street. They are, notably, cobbled streets and it was to give emphasis to this that Chris used an especailly low vantage point for this image.
With position decided, he followed his usual technique of recording the entire view - purposely trying to (at this stage) avoid the inclusion of passing figures. Only then, with all of the static elements captured did he allow himself to concentrate on the more spontaneous stage of photographing the individuals that happened to pass by - be they shoppers for fashion or road sweepers. Only much later, in post production, did the final selection of which of these to include and which to discard take place.
