For the venerable (if slightly crochety?) guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright, one particular fell had a special place in his affections: the terrier-like (as he put it) Haystacks. Despite it's modest height, he found in it's little tarns and undulations such an abundance of interest that he even elected to have his ashes scattered amongst them.
This image is taken from a small cairn at Haystacks' edge, not overlooking Mr Wainwright's resting place but westward to the beautiful Buttermere. And, beyond that, to it's just-glimpsed sister lake, Crummock Water.
