Usually you have to wait patiently for the light. Occasionally you just get lucky. Chris Writes:-

"Arriving early at the Thames' Greenland Quay river bus jetty one November morning, I was met by the sight of the rising sun burning holes through over night Thames fog, giving a truly ethereal feel to a scene that, even on an average day, can be a fine viewpoint.

Fortunately I only had a short distance to run back for my camera and in the meantime conditions actually got even better as the top of the Canary Wharf Tower emerged, Everest-like.

I was late for work that day".
