The dividing line between a sunlit open landscape and a shaded woodland is often abrupt. It is most usually experienced from a path on the sunlit side of the divide, from where the interior appears dark and vaguely forbidding; redolant of fairytale warnings: "Don't stray from the path!"
For the curious though, a few short steps into the trees provides a different perspective. How deeply buried is our species memory in which the forest was home and our fears - now reversed - were seen from the inside, looking out?
