The notes to the first image in this collection, "The Sussex South Downs", explained how that line of modest hills can hold back an entire weather front. This is another example of the phenomenon. In this case almost all of the brightness was to the seaward side, with the Weald (largely out of shot here) cloaked beneath dark, brooding cloud. For that reason the tree and adjacent ground were almost silhouetted.
With such strong contrast Chris chose to render the final image in black and white - or, rather, to produce it with the subtle hue of an old sepia toned print.
