Tower Bridge is, despite it's mock-gothic appearance, a late 19th century edifice. The design was the winning entry in a competition to provide a river crossing that would also allow tall-masted ships to pass. 125 years later it remains the most recognisable symbol of London - despite more recent iconic additions to the skyline.
Perhaps with this in mind Chris wasn't actually looking to photograph the bridge at all when he crossed by foot one evening. His attention though was taken by a detail picked out by a low level floodlight: the rivets on the under-side of the sweeping steel suspension structure. With photography mode kicking in it was an easy decision to use a shallow depth of field to leave the rivets as the focus of attention.
