John Constable was painting throughout the first third of the 19th century. Whilst we like his small cloud studies best (go see them at London's Victoria & Albert Museum!) his most famous, finished paintings are of locations in or near his family home in Dedham Vale, Suffolk. It is an area remarkably little changed over the two centuries that have elapsed since - the odd large tree apart.
The most famous of all, of course, is "The Haywain" (see right) made in 1821 and Chris' above intricate panorama of 2011 was made on the exact same spot. Being such a wide-angled view it includes not just the mill pond (minus the haywain itself...) and "Willy Lott's cottage" but also the adjacent mill - Flatford Mill - that was owned by Constable's father.
