The Thames in London wasn't always so narrow. Since Roman times centuries of bank reinforcments have gradually impinged on it's width until, in the mid 19th century, Sir Joseph Bazalgette's much-needed transforming scheme for a main sewer drew a retaining line that has endured ever since. This major - if somewhat unglamorous - subteranean development also provided for another of genteel society's (less basic) needs in the form of a paved promenade: The Embankment. (Although, to be pedantic, this stretch approaching Tower Bridge is beyond the Embankment proper).
Tower Bridge itself is, despite it's gothic appearance, of a similar age. However, despite more recent additions to the skyline it remains the most recognisable iconic symbol of London.
